This article is the project for Week 1 of the Data Science for Security and Fraud online course. Access the full course outline here.

You are trying to join The Shadows, a shadowy international gang that is rumored to be the world's most profitable crime syndicate. Its members and methods are unknown to all but the highest echelons of law enforcement agencies, but its presence is felt everywhere.

After lurking in various underground forums where members of The Shadows are known to hang out, you notice that many possible members are trying to hack into the Alpha Bank. This is a private bank for high-net-worth individuals, and the accounts are likely to hold substantial deposits.

You reason that if you are able to hack into some of these accounts and commandeer a large amount of money, you will receive an invitation to join The Shadows.

What you need to do

Your goal is to gain access to as many accounts on Alpha Bank as possible. You then need to do two things:

  • Generate a list of usernames, passwords, account numbers, and account balances that you've accessed on Alpha Bank.
  • Create an account at Alpha Bank, and transfer as much money as possible from the accounts that you've accessed into your own account. Provide a screenshot of your dashboard showing your name and balance as proof!
